Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate three new Metro sections in Kolkata on 22 August, significantly boosting urban connectivity across the city, the Indian Express reported.
“PM Modi will inaugurate the Sealdah-Esplanade section of the Green Line, Hemanta Mukhopadhyay (Ruby Crossing)-Beleghata section of the Orange Line, and Noapara-Jai Hind (airport) section of the Yellow Line,” Union minister Sukanta Majumdar posted on X on Thursday (14 August).
The event will be hosted at Jessore Road metro station on the Yellow Line, located in Kolkata’s northern suburbs.
With the opening of the Sealdah-Esplanade stretch, the East-West Metro line will finally be complete, creating a smooth link between the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade and Sector V-Sealdah routes.
Meanwhile, the 4.39-km Orange Line extension from Hemanta Mukhopadhyay to Beleghata will introduce four new stations, VIP Bazar, Ritwik Ghatak (Topsia), Barun Sengupta (Science City), and Beleghata, making travel easier for residents in the city’s southern and eastern neighbourhoods.
The Yellow Line’s new stretch from Noapara to Jai Hind Bimanbandar will have four stations- Noapara, Dum Dum Cantonment, Jessore Road, and Jai Hind Bimanbandar.
Featuring a mix of elevated and underground tracks, it will provide Kolkata a direct Metro connection to the airport.
According to the Railways Ministry, ongoing railway projects worth Rs 83,765 crore are under execution in West Bengal, with a record Rs 13,955 crore allocated this fiscal.
A total of 101 stations are being redeveloped in the state. The rail network has also been strengthened with the introduction of nine Vande Bharat and two Amrit Bharat trains.
