Protesting Punjab Farmers Halt 'Delhi Chalo' March, Future Course Of Action To Be Decided On 29 February

In a latest development, Farmer leaders have announced on Friday (23 February) that they would decide the future course of action for their 'Delhi Chalo' march on 29 February, reported NDTV.

Meanwhile, Spearheaded by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM), the protestors have outlined a series of planned protests for the upcoming week.

Today (24 February), a candle march is scheduled, followed by farmer-related seminars tomorrow.

On 26 February, protestors plan to burn effigies of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and ministers.

Additionally, meetings of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha forums are scheduled for the subsequent days.

The core demands of the protesting farmers from Punjab, including a legal guarantee on the minimum support price (MSP) and the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission's recommendations, remain unchanged.

Earlier, clashes at Khanauri on Wednesday (21 February) had resulted in the death of a protester and injuries to police personnel.

Also, the demise of 21-year-old protester Shubhkaran Singh, coupled with grievances over the registration of an FIR by the Punjab government, has fueled tensions.

Despite Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's announcement of compensation and a government job for Shubhkaran Singh's sister, protestors insist on the registration of an FIR against those responsible.

Amidst these developments, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that the Centre has formed a ministerial committee to engage in negotiations with the farmers.

"I can provide a series of lists of all that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has done for the farmers. From increasing their income to assisting with the smallest of expenses, PM Modi has taken every step for the welfare of the farmers. He works for even the small farmers," Sitharaman said.
