The District Planning Committee meeting on Thursday (30 January) saw the presentation of the 30-year Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) for Pune city, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and the rest of the district, The Indian Express reported.

The plan covers an area of 20,550 square meters, and envisions the development of a 276 km metro network and six new Bus Rapid Transit System (BRT) corridors over the next three decades.

Implementation of the plan is structured in three phases, with an estimated investment of Rs 1,26,489 crore. Multiple government agencies will collaborate on its execution.

Metro route proposals for Vanaz to Chandni Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi have been sent to the central government for approval.

The plan also proposes a 148 km metro network covering routes such as District Court to Yevlewadi, University Chowk to Dehu Road, Kharadi to Khadakwasla, Nigdi to Chakan, Hadapsar to Saswad Road, and Hadapsar to Loni Kalbhor.

Additionally, a 128 km metro corridor is planned, connecting routes such as District Court to Alandi and Wakad Chowk to Shewalewadi.

Further, a proposed High Capacity Mass Transit Route (HCMTR) through the Pune Municipal Corporation and the PCMC will be developed, bringing the total planned metro network length to 276 km.

At present, Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd. (PMPML) caters to only 10 percent of the city's commuting population.

The new mobility plan targets an increase in public transport usage to 60 per cent.

To achieve this, PMPML will require 6,000 additional buses, including 1,625 electric vehicles, pushing the total fleet size to 11,564 by 2054.

The plan also proposes 641 km of new bus routes with 18 additional corridors, and 10 new bus terminals.

Within the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) jurisdiction, six new BRT routes are proposed, covering Ravet to Rajgurunagar, Gawali Matha Chowk to Shewalewadi, Ravet to Talegaon Dabhade, Chandni Chowk to Hinjewadi (totaling 117 km), Loni Kalbhor to Kedgaon HCTMR, and Bhumkar Chowk to Chinchwad Chowk.

The long-term mobility plan is designed to improve public transport connectivity and efficiency across the Pune metropolitan region over the next 30 years.
