Pune’s Sinhagad Road flyover, stretching 2.6 km from Rajaram Bridge to Fun Time Theatre, was formally inaugurated on Monday (1 September), promising a drastic reduction in travel time and a respite from the chronic congestion endured by citizens.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who opened the first and second phase of the project, described it as a gift for Punekars during the Ganesh Chaturthi.

He said that the bridge will not only ease vehicular traffic but also contribute to lowering air pollution levels across one of the city’s busiest corridors.

Sinhagad Road is a crucial link connecting areas such as Dhayri, Narhe, Khadakwasla, Vadgaon Budruk, Nanded City and further out to the Mumbai–Bengaluru National Highway.

With over 1.5 lakh vehicles using the route daily and limited scope for road widening due to the Mutha river on one side and hills on the other, a flyover had long been deemed essential.

The project, initiated by the Pune Municipal Corporation with its foundation stone laid in September 2021 by Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, has been executed in three phases at a total cost of Rs 118.37 crore.

Phase one built a 520 metre flyover at Rajaram Pool Chowk; phase two, a 2.1 km stretch between Vitthalwadi and Fun Time Theatre; and phase three, a 1.5 km section linking Veer Shivaji Kashid Chowk to Prakash Vitthal Inamdar Chowk.

Travel time across the six junctions, once half an hour, has now dropped to just 5–6 minutes.

The project also includes upgraded three-lane roads beneath the structure, new pavements, parking facilities, and beautification works maintained under CSR initiatives for five years.
