As more evidence emerged regarding the 24 November violence in Sambhal, the Uttar Pradesh Police now intend to display posters featuring photographs of over 100 accused.
These individuals are accused of firing weapons and throwing stones during the violence against a court-mandated survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid in the Kot West area.
The violence resulted in the deaths of four people and injuries to several police officers. Over a dozen First Information Reports (FIR) have been lodged and 27 individuals have been arrested including two women.
Sambhal Superintendent of Police (SP) Krishna Kumar Bishnoi assured that no innocents would be persecuted while affirming strict punitive action against those identified through video footage.
Police used drone cameras and the available CCTV footage of the area to trace the accused. "We have sought help from our cyber cell sleuths to identify those involved in the incident," Bishnoi said.
"Their posters with photographs will be put up at main crossings and help has been sought from local people to help police in getting those whom we have identified through various sources arrested," he added.
Moradabad Divisional Commissioner Aunjaneya Kumar Singh said that the number of minors involved in the case was three till yesterday, but this number can change. The minor accused are being counseled.
He elaborated that illegal arms are being recovered and said that a different kind of knife was recovered which can be very dangerous if used among a crowd.
Meanwhile, FIRs have also been lodged by the family members of those who died during the violence alleging police firing. However, the police are firm that they did not use firearms and firing happened from the crowd.
Moradabad Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Muniraj G claimed that there has been a very good atmosphere in Sambhal in the last 24 hours and schools have also opened.
