Union Home Minister Amit Shah will meet Parliamentarians from Kerala today to discuss the arrest of two Catholic nuns charged with alleged forced conversion and human trafficking, reported The New Indian Express.
A sessions court in Chhattisgarh rejected the nuns’ bail plea on Wednesday (30 July), citing lack of jurisdiction, and directed the case to an NIA court.
The arrests of the nuns—Preethi Mary and Vandana Francis—at Durg railway station last week sparked major political outrage.
On Wednesday, Kerala MPs NK Premachandran, Benny Behanan, and Francis George met Shah, requesting urgent Central intervention.
The MPs later told The New Indian Express that Shah assured them of full support from the Centre to secure bail for the nuns.
"These two nuns have been in jail for the last five days without any reason. What cruelty is this? If the government does not act now, the situation will spiral out of control," MP K C Venugopal said in the Lok Sabha during Zero Hour.
He, along with MP K Suresh, called the incident “deeply disturbing and shocking.”
They claimed the nuns were “falsely accused” of conversion and trafficking.
The MPs had also sought an appointment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra joined Kerala MPs in a protest march outside Parliament demanding the nuns' release.
The delegation that met Shah had earlier visited the nuns in Durg jail.
The case continues to draw heated debate in Parliament and across Kerala.
