The Tamil Nadu government has granted in-principle approval for a new Chennai Metro Rail corridor stretching from Koyambedu to Pattabiram via the Outer Ring Road, according to a TOI report.

The 21.76 km route, projected to cost Rs 9,928.33 crore at 2025 prices, will significantly improve connectivity across the city’s expanding western suburbs.

The proposed corridor will feature 19 stations, including key locations such as Ambattur Estate, Dunlop, OT, Thirumullaivoyal, Avadi, Hindu College, and Pattabiram.

Notably, three flyovers are also part of the project, facilitating seamless integration with Chennai’s expanding road network. Of the total estimated cost, Rs 464 crore has been earmarked for highway components, specifically the construction of the flyovers.

According to a government order issued by the State Special Initiatives Department, the corridor’s Detailed Project Report (DPR), prepared by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), was accepted on 28 April.

The government noted that the corridor has been extended beyond Avadi up to Pattabiram to cover major points like the Outer Ring Road and the ELCOT facility at Pattabiram.

Initially conceived as a link between Koyambedu and Avadi, the plan was revised after feasibility and DPR studies recommended a longer alignment to enhance regional connectivity and cater to the rapid growth of Chennai’s western corridors.

The funding for the Rs 9,928.33 crore project is expected to come through a mix of equity support from the Union government and external loan assistance from bilateral or multilateral agencies.

The state government has now forwarded the DPR to the Centre for final approval and financial arrangements.
