Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Friday (10 January) moved two bills in the Legislative Assembly.

The bills aim to enhance the punishment for sexual offences against women and children, as well as address crimes committed against them through digital and electronic means.

These legislative changes are designed to strengthen existing laws and provide more stringent provisions to deter such crimes.

The State government firmly believed that enhancing the quantum of punishments for the offences committed against women and children in the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and also amending certain provisions relating to bail in the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, by prescribing more stringent provisions for such offences will certainly deter such deplorable acts, the Bill said.

The State government has decided to amend the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (Central Act 48 of 2023), suitably, it said.

The second Bill aims to amend the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act, 1998, to include harassment through digital and electronic means.

The Bill stresses the “urgent need” to amend the Act to cover various types of harassment, including those that occur in the digital space.

The Bill also seeks to increase the punishments for such offences, ensuring that perpetrators face severe penalties for their actions.

The amendments aim to broaden the scope of the Act and introduce stricter penalties to tackle the issue more effectively.

Both Bills are expected to be considered during the ongoing Assembly session.
