Tamil Nadu: Congress Leaders Want Share In Power, More MLA Seats Says Legislature Party Leader S Rajeshkumar

Tamil Nadu Congress Legislative Party (CLP) Leader and Killiyoor MLA S. Rajeshkumar announced that party legislators and functionaries will press the All India Congress Committee (AICC) to demand a coalition government in the state and more seats in the 2026 Assembly election.

The Congress had contested 25 seats under the DMK-led alliance in 2021, reported The Hindu.

When asked about the possibility of aligning with actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam if the DMK rejects Congress’ demands, Rajeshkumar said: “Vijay is speaking on issues that our leader Rahul Gandhi has also been highlighting. In that sense, we welcome it. However, the DMK and the Congress are firmly in the INDI Alliance and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is leading the bloc in Tamil Nadu.”

He emphasised that Congress MLAs want to participate in the next government.

“We will insist that the Congress party is allotted more number of seats in Tamil Nadu as a part of the INDI Alliance. If the Congress has to grow in Tamil Nadu, we need to be a part of the government, so that we can make a difference in the lives of the people directly,” he told The Hindu.

He credited Rahul Gandhi and Stalin’s joint campaigns for victories in the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha polls and the 2021 Assembly election, asserting that the INDI Alliance is poised to win again.

Sharing power with alliance partners has been a contentious issue in the state, with both Dravidian majors unwilling to cede space, in spite of being dependent on alliance partners to come to power. Like the Congress, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) too had demanded power-sharing in the past.

In the opposition camp, the AIADMK under Edappadi Palaniswami has consistently said that the BJP would not be part of the government if the NDA is voted to power in Tamil Nadu inspite of Union Home Minister Amit Shah saying otherwise.
