Mayiladuthurai District's Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) Deputy Superintendent of Police M Sundaresan is reportedly facing possible suspension after leveling allegations against senior police officers during a press meet.

After conducting a preliminary inquirty, Ziaul Haque, Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) of Police, Thanjavur Range, has recommended departmental action against Sundaresan for violations of conduct rules, The Hindu reported citing sources.

Inquiry Findings and Alleged Violations

Following Sundaresan’s press interaction on 17 July (Thursday), the DIG recorded statements from Superintendent of Police G Stalin and other personnel.

Stalin said the DSP had falsely claimed that he had registered 1,120 cases and arrested more than 700 prohibition offenders, “though he has not arrested a single person”.

By giving a press meet on July 17, 2025, the officer had violated provisions under Tamil Nadu Government Servants’ Conduct Rules, 1973, the sources quoted the inquiry officer as saying.

The inquiry officer noted that only district SPs and city Commissioners are empowered to conduct press briefings.

Personnel from the Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) also submitted statements accusing Sundaresan of misconduct and disobedience.

The DIG, in his report to the Inspector-General of Police, Central Zone, reportedly stated that Sundaresan had repeatedly displayed insubordination.

Instead of opting to utilise the grievance redress mechanism in the department, he had sought to address the media to make “baseless allegations against senior officers.”

His actions, the report said, affected morale and discipline within the force and brought disrepute to the police department.

Sundaresan’s remarks

Addressing the media in Mayiladuthurai on Thursday (17 July), Sundaresan levelled serious allegations against senior officers who, he said, were pushing the government to a tight corner.

While Chief Minister M K Stalin was delivering good governance, some officers were causing a bad name to the government.

The DSP said he was ready to face suspension.

Next Steps

The DIG recommended that in view of the “violations and transgressions of the rules of conduct prescribed to be followed by an officer of Tamil Nadu Police service, suitable departmental action, preferably suspension, should be initiated against Mr. Sundaresan,” the sources said.
