Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president K Annamalai today (5 July) said that Governors should avoid speaking about politics.
In a video clip, Annamalai is seen being asked if Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi should also speak to reporters like Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan.
To this Annamalai responded saying,"If the Tamil Nadu Governor speaks to the press, there can be nobody more happier than us because the DMK's wrongdoings will come out. But still I think he should not be meeting reporters daily, the reason being, I believe Governors should not speak about politics. I feel it sets a wrong precedent.
"If they start speaking to reporters on politics on a daily basis like us, the honour of the post they hold would be affected. Occasional interviews to print media are fine."
Further, he said that there is a difference in the BJP as a party criticising the government and the Governor criticising it, even if the criticism is genuine.
"As an opposition party in the state, it our duty to put forward the shortcomings of the government in the public domain", he said.
He added that each Governor has their own style and he would not like to comment on that.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
