A 77-meter-long and 10-meter-wide glass bridge connecting the iconic Vivekananda Rock Memorial and the towering 133-feet-high Thiruvalluvar statue was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister (CM) M K Stalin on Monday (30 December) evening.
Hailed as the first of its kind in India, the glass bridge offers visitors a breathtaking view of the monuments dedicated to the two revered figures and the surrounding sea. "It provides a thrilling experience of walking above the sea," said a tourist official.
The project, executed at a cost of Rs 37 crore by the Tamil Nadu state government, marks a significant milestone as it coincides with the silver jubilee of the unveiling of the Thiruvalluvar statue by the late CM M Karunanidhi.
The glass bridge, featuring a bowstring arch design, has been engineered to endure the corrosive effects of the saline breeze, ensuring durability and safety. It is expected to become a major attraction at Kanyakumari.
During the inauguration, CM Stalin was accompanied by Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin, MP Kanimozhi, state ministers, and senior officials. After the formal ceremony, the dignitaries walked across the bridge, marveling at its unique design and scenic views.
Adding to the grandeur of the event, a laser light show was organised at the Thiruvalluvar statue, further enhancing the visual appeal of the newly inaugurated bridge.
