The Tamil Nadu government has initiated the land acquisition process for Chennai’s second airport at Parandur, issuing a Government Order (GO) on 25 June under the Tamil Nadu Acquisition of Land for Industrial Purposes Act 1997, The Hindu reported.
Several villages, including Parandur, Valathur, Ciruvallur, Gunakarapakkam, Akkamapuram, and others, will be affected. The project spans across Kancheepuram and Sriperumbudur taluks.
As per the GO, the government has fixed a flat compensation rate ranging from Rs 35 lakh to Rs 60 lakh per acre for 1,960.63 acres of land, where the guideline value lies between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 17 lakh per acre.
For 374.53 acres in Akkamapuram, Nelvoy and Thandalam, the Kancheepuram Collector is permitted to negotiate compensation privately, also based on guideline values ranging between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 17 lakh per acre.
In areas where the guideline value exceeds Rs 17 lakh per acre, such as Parandur, Magadevi Mangalam and Eganapuram , the compensation will also be determined through private negotiations. In some cases, this may reach as high as Rs 60 lakh to Rs 2.57 crore per acre.
If landowners refuse the offered rates, acquisition will proceed as per statutory provisions of the 1997 Act, with compensation fixed accordingly.
In 2023, the government approved the acquisition of 1,527.32 hectares of patta lands and 798.12 hectares of government land across Sriperumbudur and Kancheepuram taluks for the airport project.
