Bollywood director Vivek Agnihotri’s upcoming film 'The Bengal Files' has run into controversy ahead of its release, with the makers alleging pressure on theatre owners in West Bengal not to screen it, The New Indian Express reported.

The team has indicated that they may move court to ensure the film’s release.

The movie is the final instalment in Agnihotri’s The Files trilogy, following The Tashkent Files (2019) and The Kashmir Files (2022).

It explores the communal riots that erupted in Kolkata in August 1946, a turbulent period that preceded India’s Independence.

Starring Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Pallavi Joshi, Saswata Chatterjee and Darshan Kumarr, the film has been released nationwide on Friday (5 September).

However, the director has claimed that several theatre owners, including major multiplex chains in West Bengal, have expressed apprehension after allegedly being threatened by local authorities against screening the film.

The filmmakers have argued that such actions are unlawful and have signaled their intent to file a writ petition if the situation does not improve.

They emphasised that the film has also been dubbed in Bengali to cater to regional audiences, underlining that there is strong demand for its release in the state.

Producer and actor Pallavi Joshi has further sought the intervention of President Droupadi Murmu to ensure a smooth release, stating that the issue is not just about cinema but also about safeguarding creative freedom.

With the controversy intensifying, the release of The Bengal Files in West Bengal remains uncertain.
