Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (1 November) launched a scathing attack on Congress after the party chief Mallikarjun Kharge advised party leaders to ensure their promises are "fiscally doable."
“The Congress Party is realising the hard way that making unreal promises is easy but implementing them properly is tough or impossible. Campaign after campaign they promise things to the people, which they also know they will never be able to deliver. Now, they stand badly exposed in front of the people!” the Prime Minister posted on X.
PM Modi’s remarks came a day after Mallikarjun Kharge publicly criticised the Karnataka government when Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar suggested that a key guarantee of the Congress government would be reviewed.
"You promised five guarantees in Karnataka. Inspired by you, we made a promise of five guarantees in Maharashtra. Today, you mentioned that you would cancel one of those guarantees. It seems like you don't all read the newspapers, but I do, so I'm telling you this,” Kharge said at a press conference which was also attended by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and deputy DK Shivakumar.
Hitting out at Congress, PM Modi raised the issue of governance in Congress-ruled states, highlighting a deterioration in developmental progress and fiscal health.
"Check any state where the Congress has Governments today - Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana - the developmental trajectory and fiscal health is turning from bad to worse," the Prime Minister said.
"Their so-called Guarantees lie unfulfilled, which is a terrible deceit upon the people of these states. The victims of such politics are the poor, youngsters, farmers and women, who are not only denied the benefits of these promises but also see their existing schemes diluted," he added.
PM Modi also cautioned the public to stay alert against what he described as a Congress-sponsored culture of "false promises."
"The people of the country will have to be vigilant against the Congress sponsored culture of fake promises! We saw recently how the people of Haryana rejected their lies and preferred a Government that is stable, progress oriented and action-driven," the Prime Minister further said.
"In Karnataka, Congress is busier in intra-party politics and loot instead of even bothering to deliver on development. Not only that, they are also going to rollback existing schemes. In Himachal Pradesh, salaries of Government workers is not paid on time. In Telangana, farmers are waiting for the waiver they promised. Previously, in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan they promised certain allowances which were never implemented for five years. There are numerous such examples of how the Congress works," PM Modi said.
Responding to PM Modi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge countered by saying that lies, deceit, fakery, loot and publicity are the five adjectives which best describe the current government.---
"Your drumbeating regarding a 100-day plan was a cheap PR stunt! On May 16, 2024 you had also claimed that you took inputs from more than 20 lakh people for the road map for 2047. RTI filed in PMO declined to put forth details, exposing your LIES! The 'B' in BJP stands for Betrayal, while the 'J' stands for JUMLA," Kharge said in a post on X.
"MODI KI GUARANTEE is a cruel joke on 140 Crore Indians!" he added.
