The Delhi Police have stepped up their efforts to locate and deport illegal immigrants living in the capital. This is evident from the recent detainment and subsequent arrest of three additional individuals from Bangladesh, Indian Express reported.

On Tuesday (31 December), Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in Southwest Delhi, Surendra Choudhary reported the arrest of a mother and son from Bangladesh. They had been residing in Delhi for almost 20 years and were detained on Sunday during a specific verification operation.

“On 29 December, a special team led by Inspector Ravindra Kumar Verma (Station House Officer South Campus) received a tip-off about a Bangladeshi national in the Shastri Market area near Pippal Chowk," the DCP said.

He added, "Acting swiftly on the information, the team intercepted a suspect, identified as Naim Khan, 22, hailing from the Khulna region of Bangladesh. Upon interrogation, Khan admitted to entering India illegally via the West Bengal border in 2020 and residing at Katwaria Sarai in Delhi with his mother Nazma Khan."

“Further investigation revealed that Nazma had entered India approximately 20 years ago through the Benapole border and had been working as a domestic helper," Choudhary elaborated.

DCP Choudhary confirmed that Naim and Nazma were both apprehended and, after adhering to the requisite legal processes, they were sent back to Bangladesh via the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO).

In a distinct operation, the police apprehended another individual from Bangladesh, named Mohammad Akhtar Seikh, during a standard address verification process.

“He was arrested earlier on 28 November by the Sarojini Nagar police in connection with a drug case. After being produced before the court, he was released on bail,” DCP Choudhary said.

On December 30, while carrying out a standard address verification, law enforcement authorities found out that Seikh had escaped his former dwelling and was currently concealing himself in various places.

A covert investigation revealed that he was a Bangladeshi national, even though he had first claimed to be from West Bengal. The authorities located him at the Sarojini Nagar Railway Station, where he was subsequently re-arrested, according to the DCP.

During questioning, Seikh disclosed that his birthplace was Madarganj in Kochaghata, Bangladesh, and he had unlawfully entered India in 2004 through the terrestrial border with West Bengal, according to the police.

DCP Choudhary revealed that Seikh, who had been employed as a laborer at a construction site in Delhi, had previously resided in West Bengal. It was there that he married a Hindu woman in 2012 before relocating to Delhi for his job.

“He was unable to produce any valid Indian identification documents. Accordingly, a fresh case was filed under Section 14 of the Foreigners Act, and he was arrested once again on Monday,” the DCP explained.

The three arrests have been made after earlier detention of a 28-year-old Sonali Sheikh, who was residing for six years in India, and is set to be deported. The police swung into action after orders from Lieutenant Governor Secretariat.
