US President Donald Trump has nominated his close political aide, Sergio Gor, as the next American ambassador to India, marking a significant move during a sensitive phase in Washington–New Delhi relations, NDTV reported.

At 38, Gor has built a reputation as a key figure within conservative political circles, rising swiftly in influence.

In the White House, he was tasked with reviewing nearly 4,000 appointments to guarantee unwavering loyalty to President Trump.

Among Gor’s critics is business magnate Elon Musk, who publicly called him a “snake” after a clash with Trump led to the rejection of Musk’s preferred candidate for NASA leadership.

Despite his considerable clout, Gor’s foreign policy background remains limited, largely restricted to accompanying official overseas trips and overseeing the removal of certain National Security Council staff whose views were called into suspicion.

"For the most populous Region in the World, it is important that I have someone I can fully trust to deliver on my Agenda and help us, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

He further expressed confidence that “Sergio will make an incredible Ambassador.”

In addition to the ambassadorship, Trump announced that Gor will serve as his special envoy for South and Central Asia.

The decision aligns with Trump’s pattern of sidelining career diplomats in favor of personal allies, while the key State Department post for South Asia continues to remain unfilled.

Gor’s nomination follows heightened tensions with India, which successive US administrations have identified as a vital partner since the 1990s.

Recently, Trump imposed increased tariffs on India, aiming to push New Delhi to reduce energy imports from Russia, even as he continues his own diplomatic outreach with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In the past weeks, India has engaged in high-level talks with both Russia and China.

US leaders, across different administrations, have consistently regarded India as a crucial counterbalance to China, Washington’s principal global competitor.

Trump has floated the idea of mediating between India and Pakistan following their recent ceasefire after a brief clash in May, though New Delhi has categorically rejected such offers.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio publicly backed the nomination on X, describing Gor as an “excellent representative of America in one of the most important relationships our nation has in the world.”
