In a moment of spectacular irony, US President Donald Trump claimed ignorance about America’s own imports of Russian uranium and fertilisers, even as he continues to accuse India of funding Russia’s war machine through oil purchases.

Asked by ANI whether the US still buys uranium hexafluoride, fertilisers or chemicals from Russia, Trump said: “I don’t know anything about it. I’ll have to check.”

The question wasn’t speculative. According to US trade data, American imports from Russia rose 23 per cent year-on-year between January and May 2025. These included uranium, fertiliser chemicals, and palladium.

In 2024, the US imported $1.27 billion worth of fertilisers, $624 million worth of uranium, and $878 million worth of palladium from Russia.

Trump has warned of raising tariffs on Indian goods unless New Delhi reduces energy ties with Moscow. However, no specifics were provided by the US on the scope or timing of any proposed measures.

Indian officials said the criticism is unjustified. They argue that energy purchases from Russia are based on economic and security considerations and that many Western countries also continue selective trade with Moscow.
