US President Donald Trump’s tariff hike has inflicted losses of nearly Rs 25,000 crore on Andhra Pradesh’s shrimp exports, forcing cancellation of about 50 per cent of orders, according to state officials, reported The Indian Express.
Andhra Pradesh, which contributes 80 per cent of India’s shrimp exports and 34 per cent of total marine exports worth Rs 21,246 crore annually, now faces a severe crisis.
The additional tariff burden of Rs 600 crore has landed on 2,000 containers, prompting Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to seek urgent intervention from the Centre.
US tariffs climbed to 59.72 per cent after Trump imposed an additional 25 per cent levy over an earlier 25 per cent, combined with a 5.76 per cent countervailing duty and 3.96 per cent anti-dumping duty.
In letters to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, and Fisheries Minister Rajeev Ranjan Singh, Naidu urged tax relief and financial aid for aqua farmers.
He recommended GST waivers, interest subsidies, and a 240-day moratorium on loan repayments. He also pressed for Free Trade Agreements with the European Union, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, and Russia to diversify markets.
Over 30 lakh people in Andhra depend on shrimp farming and related activities. Highlighting their hardships, Naidu said his government had already reduced aqua feed prices by Rs 9 per kg and was considering subsidies on transformers.
Aqua farmers and their families are facing hardships due to the tariffs, he stressed.
Naidu also called for interim financial support and clarity on central relief schemes, noting that exporters are ready to supply seafood to the EU if market access improves.
