A jawan from the Central Reserve Police Force’s elite COBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) unit was killed in an early morning encounter with Maoists in Jharkhand’s Bokaro district on Wednesday (16 July), the Indian Express reported.

Two Maoists were also gunned down in the gunfight, officials said.

The encounter occurred in the forests of Birhordera, under Gomia police station limits, following a joint operation launched by security forces based on intelligence inputs.

According to Jharkhand Director General of Police Anurag Gupta, two Maoists were also killed in the encounter.

The joint operation, involving personnel from the COBRA 209 battalion and district police, began as a combing mission in the early hours of 16 July.

Around 6 am, security forces came face-to-face with the Maoists, triggering an exchange of fire.

A COBRA jawan sustained critical injuries during the exchange of fire and died while being evacuated for medical treatment.

Jharkhand DGP Anurag Gupta said that the bodies of both Maoists had been recovered from the encounter site. He noted that one of the slain Maoists was wearing a uniform, while the other appeared to be in civilian clothes.

An AK-47 assault rifle was also recovered from the scene.

Security forces have launched a continued search in the area to track down any remaining Maoist operatives.

The operation is part of an ongoing crackdown against the outlawed Communist Party of India (Maoist), which has been active in several districts of Jharkhand.
