Udhampur is set to gain an airport, with Union Minister of State in the PMO Dr Jitendra Singh confirming that the long-awaited project will be executed in two phases
As per a Greater Kashmir report, in the first phase, civil flight operations will begin within the existing premises of the Udhampur Air Force Station (AFS). The second phase will see the creation of a permanent civil enclave outside the AFS.
Dr Singh revealed that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has completed a site feasibility study and begun formal processes for developing a new Aviation Enclave.
“These high-level engagements have helped expedite the inter-ministerial coordination required for moving the proposal forward,” he stated, following meetings with Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, Civil Aviation Secretary Samir K Sinha and AAI officials.
This is the second major aviation initiative for the region under Dr Singh’s tenure as MP, after successfully pushing for an airport in Kishtwar under the UDAN scheme.
The proposal, initially triggered by his reference to AAI, has already advanced with a technical team visiting the Udhampur AFS on 28 and 29 March 2025. Their review included consultations with the Indian Air Force, defence authorities and the district administration.
In phase one, the Indian Air Force has in principle agreed to allocate 2,200 square metres for a terminal capable of handling up to 150 passengers and accommodating ATR-72 or Q400 aircraft.
Phase two envisages a 27.6 acre civil enclave, identified by the district administration, to handle larger aircraft such as the Airbus A321, complete with a new terminal, apron and taxiway.
Once operational, the Udhampur Civil Enclave will ease pressure on Jammu airport, enhance connectivity for residents and tourists, and carry significant strategic importance for the region.
