India and New Zealand on Monday (17 March) signed a major agreement to institutionalise their defence and security partnership, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral ties, reported The Hindu.
The pact was finalised during a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon in New Delhi.
A key highlight of the discussions was the decision to formalise defence cooperation through a structured roadmap for collaboration in the defence industry sector.
In a joint statement, Modi emphasised that both nations stand united against terrorism, recalling attacks such as the 2019 Christchurch attack in New Zealand and the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.
"We both are unanimous against terrorism…..terrorism in any form is unacceptable," Modi stated, quoted as saying by the Hindu.
He also stressed the need for continued cooperation against terrorist, separatist, and radical elements, referring specifically to anti-India activities by unlawful elements in New Zealand.
Beyond security, the two leaders announced the beginning of negotiations for a mutually beneficial free trade agreement (FTA).
Modi highlighted that this pact would boost trade and investment, particularly in key sectors like dairy, food processing, and pharmaceuticals.
"This will boost the potential of mutual trade and investment. Mutual cooperation and investment will be encouraged in areas like dairy, food processing, and pharma," he said, underlining the importance of trade expansion between the two nations.
The talks also covered geopolitical concerns in the Indo-Pacific region, with both countries reaffirming their commitment to a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific.
Luxon acknowledged the complex strategic challenges in the region and assured India of New Zealand’s dedication to working together on shared concerns.
"I reiterated our strong commitment to address shared concerns over our respective interests in contributing to a prosperous Indo-Pacific," Luxon stated.
