Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday (8 October) informed the state assembly that the Metro rail projects in Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram will be undertaken by Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL), moving forward in accordance with the revised 2017 Metro Rail Policy, reported Times of India.
The policy mandates the preparation of a detailed project report (DPR) to be finalised with the Union government’s approval.
Responding to CPM MLA P V Sreenijan’s query regarding metro expansion across the state, Vijayan elaborated on the progress and planning stages.
In Thiruvananthapuram, preliminary work has already commenced with the construction of the Sreekaryam flyover.
KMRL has submitted multiple alignment options for the city’s metro corridor, and a secretary-level committee, chaired by the Chief Secretary, has been tasked with selecting the alignment that offers maximum efficiency and commuter convenience.
The comprehensive mobility plan and alternative analysis report submitted by KMRL are currently under government review, after which the DPR will be prepared and subsequent steps initiated.
Meanwhile, in Kozhikode, the metro project remains in the planning phase under KMRL’s mandate, with DPR preparation to follow the national policy framework.
The Chief Minister also highlighted that the second phase of Kochi Metro, spanning 11.2 km from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to Kakkanad Infopark via Smart City, is progressing steadily.
Besides the extension, there are no plans presently to expand Kochi Metro to other areas, he clarified.
