Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday (1 February) announced that laws will be amended to bolster nuclear energy sector in India.
The minister announced that the Atomic Energy Act and the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act will be amended to realise goal of development of at least 100 GW of nuclear energy by 2047.
This initiative is expected to attract private sector investment in the nuclear energy sector.
Nuclear Energy Mission for research and development of Small Modular Reactors (SMR) will be set up, with outlay of Rs 20,000 crore, the minister said.
Further, at least five indigenously developed SMRs will be operationalised by 2033.
