A group of civil society members, including retired bureaucrats and activists, has approached the Supreme Court alleging inaction by the Uttar Pradesh Police against the Dharam Sansad event scheduled to be held in Ghaziabad this week.

The event is reportedly organised by Yati Narasinghanand, known for making alleged inflammatory remarks against the Muslim community.

The petition, filed as a contempt plea, was mentioned before Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna for urgent hearing by advocate Prashant Bhushan.

The petitioners have alleged that the event violates the Supreme Court's 2022 directives, which mandate suo motu action against hate speech without considering the religion of the offender.

According to the plea, the promotional materials for the Dharam Sansad, including its website and advertisements, contain “several communal statements against the followers of Islam, inciting violence against Muslims.”

The petitioners include prominent individuals such as retired IAS officer Aruna Roy, former diplomat Deb Mukarji, former bureaucrat Navrekha Sharma, and activists Syeda Hameed and Vijayan MJ. They argue that the event poses a direct threat to communal harmony and violates constitutional principles.

The Supreme Court, which has been hearing a series of petitions seeking measures to curb hate speech in India, asked the petitioners to file an urgent application. The petitioners informed the court that the application had already been submitted.

Narasinghanand has been accused of delivering repeated hate speeches targeting the Muslim community. The plea seeks the court’s intervention to prevent the event and hold authorities accountable for their alleged failure to act.
