US: Conservative Influencer Charlie Kirk Shot Dead In Utah, Trump Orders American Flags Lowered To Half-Staff

Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative commentator and co-founder of the youth movement, 'Turning Point USA', was shot while speaking at a college event in Utah on Wednesday (10 September).

A vocal supporter of US President Donald Trump and a familiar face in right-wing politics, the 31-year-old has been known for his fiery commentary on issues ranging from Covid-19 to climate change, and for mobilising young conservatives across the country.

According to officials and eyewitnesses, Kirk was addressing students during Turning Point USA’s “American Comeback Tour” at Utah Valley University when gunfire erupted. Video footage shows him recoiling, clutching his neck, and collapsing as the audience scattered in panic.

Law enforcement later confirmed that the shot came from the roof of a nearby building, about 200 yards away. The suspect, who is not a student, has been taken into custody.

Trump, who has often credited Kirk with boosting Republican outreach among young voters, immediately called on his supporters to pray for him. Calling him a "truly great American patriot," Trump ordered all American flags be lowered to half-mast throughout the US until Sunday evening.

Vice President JD Vance and Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr also issued public messages of support, while Utah Governor Spencer Cox said he was receiving continuous updates from law enforcement. FBI Director Kash Patel announced that agents were already on the ground investigating the attack.

Turning Point USA confirmed the shooting in a statement, adding that Kirk was hospitalised and that the organisation was praying for his recovery. The group has at least 14 more events scheduled as part of its ongoing national tour.

Kirk, often a lightning rod in America’s culture wars, has long positioned himself as a defender of conservative values on college campuses. He has denounced critical race theory and questioned climate change science. His influence on the Republican base—particularly among younger voters—has made him a central figure in Trump-aligned politics.
