Ukraine and the United States (US) have agreed on a framework for a broad economic deal, which includes the exploitation of rare earth minerals, news agency AP reported citing three senior Ukrainian officials on Tuesday (25 February).
The officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the discussions, revealed that Kyiv views the agreement as a crucial step in securing the continued flow of US military support, which remains vital for Ukraine amid ongoing tensions.
There has been no immediate response from the administration of US President Donald Trump regarding the development.
However, sources cited in the AP report suggest that the agreement could be formally signed as early as Friday (28 February).
Plans are reportedly being finalised for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to travel to Washington to meet with President Trump, one of the officials indicated.
The proposed meeting would provide an opportunity to discuss continued US military aid to Ukraine, a matter of significant importance for Kyiv as it seeks to strengthen its defence capabilities.
