The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a comprehensive seven-tier security arrangement to ensure the safety of over 40 crore devotees expected to attend the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj.

Temporary police stations and checkpoints are being set up across urban and rural areas, including key transit points like railway stations, bus terminals, and airports.

The security apparatus will include the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), Bomb Disposal and Detection (BDD) teams, and AS Check teams. Reserve units will also be stationed for additional support.

Prayagraj Police Commissioner Tarun Gaba stated, "13 temporary police stations and 23 checkpoints are being established, increasing the total number of police stations from 44 to 57. Around 10,000 police personnel will be deployed across urban and rural areas."

The Prayagraj Police Commissionerate's infrastructure has been organized into eight zones, 18 sectors, 21 companies, two reserve CAPF companies, five PAC companies, four NDRF teams, 12 AS Check teams, and four BDD teams, according to the UP government’s statement.

The Maha Kumbh will commence on Paush Poornima, 13 January, and will continue for 45 days, concluding on Maha Shivratri, 26 February.

Meanwhile, a delegation of senior Madhya Pradesh Police officials undertook a two-day visit to Prayagraj to study the Uttar Pradesh Police's security and crowd control measures as part of preparations for the 2028 Kumbh in Ujjain.

The delegation, which arrived on Friday (27 December), held meetings with their Uttar Pradesh counterparts to gain insights into various aspects of security arrangements, including the use of AI, mechanisms to counter cybercrime, and crowd management systems. They also toured key locations in the Kumbh Mela area to observe the preparations at the ground level.

Tarun Kaushik, Deputy Inspector General in the Madhya Pradesh Police's Anti-Terror Squad (ATS), praised the Uttar Pradesh Police model, stating it should be adopted by forces in other states.

He added that the Madhya Pradesh Police will coordinate with the Uttar Pradesh Police during the 2028 Kumbh in Ujjain.
