A woman from Karur has returned the Rs 20-lakh compensation given by actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay, expressing disappointment that he did not visit her personally to offer condolences after the Karur rally tragedy, The Hindu reported.

Shankavi Perumal, whose husband was among the 41 victims of last month’s stampede at a TVK event, said she was “upset” that Vijay chose to meet the bereaved families at a private resort in Mamallapuram instead of visiting Karur.

“I expected Mr. Vijay would visit Karur to offer his condolences to me and other affected persons. Without my knowledge, some TVK members convinced a few members of my husband’s family and took them to Mamallapuram to meet him. He should have visited Karur. It is disappointing. Hence, I have returned the money,” she said.

Earlier, Vijay had reached out to the families through a video call, assuring them that he would meet them soon. He later transferred Rs 20 lakh each as compensation to the bank accounts of all 41 victims’ families.

Ms. Shankavi, a resident of Kodangipatti, said she received the amount last week but returned it via Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) to the same account.

She submitted a written request to the bank authorising the reversal on Monday (27 October), coinciding with Vijay’s meeting with the other bereaved families in Mamallapuram.

Balu, a close relative of the deceased Ramesh who attended the meeting, described her decision as unexpected and suggested that she may not have acted independently, alleging that local political figures might have influenced her choice.

The Karur tragedy, which claimed 41 lives during a TVK event, has prompted the Madras High Court to direct the Tamil Nadu government to frame a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for political meetings and rallies within 10 days.
