“Why Garg Had Been Taken To Singapore Despite Health Concerns”: CID to Probe Zubeen Garg’s Death After Complaint Names Manager, Festival Organiser
The Assam government has ordered a CID probe into the death of Zubeen Garg, following a police complaint accusing his manager, Siddharth Sharma and North East India Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta of negligence and mismanagement.
Garg, 52, one of Assam’s most celebrated singers and cultural icons, died in Singapore on Friday afternoon.
He was there as Cultural Brand Ambassador for the festival organised under the banner of the High Commission of India.
According to organisers, “Garg passed away at 2:30 pm at Singapore General Hospital, where he had been taken after suffering complications while swimming during a yacht trip.”
On Saturday, the state government said his post-mortem had been completed and the body handed over to Sharma and others in the presence of Indian embassy officials.
Ratul Bora, a resident of Morigaon, complained on Friday evening, questioning why Garg had been taken to Singapore despite health concerns.
An FIR was registered under murder charges. Superintendent of Police Hemanta Kumar Das said, “The FIR is as per the complaint. Later on, this can be amended based on what the investigation reveals.”
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that all complaints related to the case would be consolidated under the CID.
“Both Mahanta (organiser) and Sharma (manager), as well as the people who were with Zubeen at that time, will come under the investigation… Singapore authorities have started an investigation… The government will probe this in a completely neutral way so that everything will be in the open and there is complete closure,” he said.
Festival organisers stated they were unaware of the yacht visit, saying they were attending meetings with Singaporean officials when informed of Garg’s accident. The remaining events were cancelled after his death.
