Will Sitharaman, Jaishankar Contest Lok Sabha Elections From Karnataka? Here's What We Know So Far

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar are likely to contest Lok Sabha elections.

However, it is unclear from where they will contest the upcoming LS elections, which will be held in April-May this year.

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi had earlier this week said that there is a possibility that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) might field EAM Jaishankar and FM Sitharaman from the constituencies in Karnataka in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, Union Minister

"Dr S Jaishankar and Nirmala Sitharaman may contest from Karnataka or from other state constituencies. There is still no clarity about the constituency," Union Minister Pralhad Joshi said in Karnataka's Hubballi, ANI reported.

However, Joshi later clarified that he hadn't named anybody specifically.

"I have only said that anybody can contest, and not specifically (named anyone). It is a national party and our leadership will decide. I have not said it like that," Joshi was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

Jaishankar is currently a member of Rajya Sabha from Gujarat while Sitharaman represents Karnataka in the Upper House.

Nirmala Sitharaman joined the BJP in 2008 and held the position of national spokesperson for the party until 2014.

She became a Minister of State after Narendra Modi became the prime minister of the country. The same year she became a member of the Rajya Sabha from Andhra Pradesh.

From 2017 to 2019, Sitharaman served as the defence minister of India.

S Jaishankar, a career diplomat, was appointed as the foreign secretary in 2015.

In 2019, he joined Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cabinet as External Affairs Minister and was nominated to the Rajya Sabha.
