The Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath led Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday (3 June) authorised a plan to give former Agniveers a 20 per cent reservation for a number of positions in the Uttar Pradesh Police recruitment.

The horizontal reservation will apply to direct recruitment as a police constable, mounted constable, Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), or fireman, reported The Hindu.

“The main objective of this decision is to ensure meaningful post-service employment opportunities for Agniveers, who complete their four-year tenure under the Agnipath scheme. This reservation will be applicable across all categories — General, SC (Scheduled Caste), ST (Scheduled Tribe), and OBC (Other Backward Class)—within their respective groups. For example, an SC Agniveer will get the benefit within the SC category, and similarly for OBC and other groups,” UP Finance Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna was quoted as saying by The Hindu.

Additionally, the UP government announced that former Agniveers would be eligible for a three-year age relaxation while applying for these positions.

The policy's first round of hiring is anticipated to begin in 2026, the same year when the first batch of Agniveers returns from services in the Armed forces.

“This decision not only honours the service of Agniveers but also ensures their continued contribution to national security in a new capacity,” the state government's statement was quoted as saying in The Hindu report.

The Union government's Agnipath program allows young people to serve as Agniveers for four years in the Indian Army, Air Force, and Navy.
