Yogi Govt Goes Strict On Bureaucracy, Warns Officers Of Action Over Neglecting Public Representatives’ Correspondence

The Yogi Adityanath government on 12 September issued a fresh government order (GO) warning officers of strict action if they failed to acknowledge and act on letters from public representatives, including MPs, MLAs, and MLCs, reported The New Indian Express.

The directive, signed by Parliamentary Affairs Principal Secretary JP Singh-II, stated: “Ensure replies to the letters of public representatives and take action on priority or else, action, as per rules, would be taken against the officers.” The order went to all additional chief secretaries, the DGP, departmental heads, divisional commissioners, district magistrates, and others.

Highly placed sources revealed that officers ignored at least three earlier GOs issued on 3 April 2018, 21 January 2021, and 7 April 2025. Despite repeated instructions, legislators complained that officials did not provide replies, which Singh admitted was “tarnishing the image of the state government.”

The order directed every government office to maintain a register recording correspondence with public representatives and to ensure acknowledgement and timely replies, including updates on action taken.

Officials said the decision followed multiple complaints raised during last month’s monsoon session of the state legislature. Singh warned that if officers continued to neglect letters, the matter would reach the topmost level of governance.

BJP MLC and state vice-president Vijay Pathak said, “The state government is serious about dealing with issues concerning protocol to be accorded to the public representatives. It is the privilege of the members of both houses of the state legislature that their letters and phone calls are replied to.”

However, SP spokesman and MLC Rajendra Chaudhary countered, “The officers, seemingly, don’t care for such instructions. The public representatives have been humiliated regularly in the past nearly eight-and-a-half years of this government. The state government is only making a mockery of the whole issue.”
