On 27 July, the Union government apprised the Supreme Court that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will conduct a probe into the Manipur incident where two women were paraded naked and molested.

A video of the incident went viral on the social media sparking widespread condemnation.

The government has stated that it has zero tolerance towards any crime against women and a heinous offence like this will be taken seriously and appropriate measures would be taken in order that it can have deterrent effect across the nation.

Therefore, the central government with the consent of the state decided to entrust the investigation to the CBI.

The government has assured that the investigation will be completed as early as possible and the trial will be held in a time bound manner.

The government also added the trial should take place outside the state of Manipur. Therefore, it requested the Supreme Court to transfer the probe to another state.

The affidavit of the government has been filed subsequent to a suo moto case registered in the apex court after the video of the spine-chilling incident went viral.

The bench headed by the CJI had sought response of the central and the state governments on the steps taken by them to book those who are accused.

The affidavit further claims that at least seven accused have been already arrested, and booked for rape and murder amongst other offences.
