One-Fourth Of Upper Caste People Are Poor: Economic Report Of Bihar Caste Survey Reveals

Bihar government presented the economic report on the state's caste-based census in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday (7 November) which reveals that one-fourth of the people from upper castes are poor.

According to Jagran, over 27 per cent Bhumihars, over 25 per cent Brahmins and around 25 per cent Rajputs are poor. The lowest number of poor among upper castes is in the Kayasth community with 13 per cent.

Similarly, Muslim upper castes also have a significant proportion of poor people. Around 26 per cent Sheikhs, 22 per cent Pathans (Khans) and over 17 per cent Syeds are categorised as poor.

According to public data, the economically disadvantaged Bhumihar families in Bihar have a total population of 8.36 lakhs. Similarly, about 9.53 lakhs of Rajput families are economically disadvantaged.

The total population of Sheikh (Muslim) families is around 11 lakhs. Among them, 2.68 lakhs are economically disadvantaged.

It is important to note that economically disadvantaged families have a monthly income of less than Rs 6,000. Furthermore, in Bihar, a total of 34 per cent of all communities are economically disadvantaged when combined.
