South Mumbai - more diverse than you thought

The Swarajya 50 ground reports project is a great way to 'read' India. The latest ground report on South Mumbai is an example.

From chawls to corporate HQs: The South Mumbai LS constituency is made up of Colaba, Malabar Hill, Mumbadevi, Byculla, Worli, and Sewree.

• Each of these segments is distinct in terms of their socio-economic character.

• Upscale, corporate HQ areas: Colaba, Malabar Hill, and parts of Worli.

• The old chawls: Parts of Worli, lower Parel, Byculla and Sewree - with chawls dating back to the 1920s!
  

• Linguistically as well: The split is along Marathi - Gujarati - Hindi speaking lines.

Shiv Sena's story in South Mumbai: Part of Sena's story goes back to working  with industrialists to reduce Communist trade unions to size.

• Migrants from other parts of Maharashtra settled here to work in the mills.

• This old Left support base has now moved entirely to Shiv Sena.
  

• Ironically, the Left that was destroyed by Shiv Sena is today campaigning for a Sena faction candidate.

Understanding South Mumbai: Given all the complexities involved - how are the two factions of Shiv Sena - the UBT and Eknath Shinde faction fighting it out?
