The inaugural meeting of the 'One Nation, One Election' committee is expected to occur today, according to sources from the news agency ANI.

This significant meeting, likely scheduled for today, will be presided over by former President Ram Nath Kovind at his residence in Delhi, according to additional information from the same sources.

Following the recent announcement of a special five-day special session in Parliament by the Central government, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led administration established a high-level committee chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind.

The primary objective of this committee is to provide recommendations concerning the feasibility of conducting synchronised elections as part of the 'One Nation, One Election' initiative.

This move has sparked speculation that the government intends to propose holding Lok Sabha (national) and Assembly (state) elections concurrently.

Under the leadership of former President Ram Nath Kovind, the committee's tasks encompass a comprehensive assessment and proposals for specific modifications to the Constitution, the Representation of the People Act, and any other pertinent laws and regulations required to enable simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.

Additionally, the committee will explore and suggest whether the proposed constitutional amendments necessitate approval from the states.

Furthermore, the committee is tasked with evaluating and recommending potential solutions for various scenarios, including a hung House (no clear majority), the passage of a no-confidence motion, defections, or any other unforeseen events in the event of synchronised elections.
