Pravin Raj, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) functionary in Tamil Nadu, was arrested early this morning (1 October) for allegedly derogatory posts on social media.

In a post on X, Raj wrote that some people knocked at his door at 2 AM and then tried to break the door. The people claimed to be from cyber crime when asked and threatened locals who asked to see their identity cards, saying it is a crime, he said. Further, he said that they were not accompanied by local police as per protocol.

While BJP industrial wing vice-president Selvakumar earlier said that the arrest was for a video regarding the protests on the Cauvey water issue in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, Jothimani, an MP from the Congress, which is an alliance partner of the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) said that the arrest was based on a complaint from the Karur District Congress Committee for editing and publishing an "obscene video" on Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi.

The video is reportedly about a real instance of Rahul Gandhi publicly kissing his sister Priyanka Gandhi.

The arrest comes a day after journalist Abhijit Majumder posted that cops from Tamil Nadu arrived at the office of a media house he writes for regarding his article criticising Udhayanidhi Stalin for his 'eradicate Sanatana Dharma' remarks.

Prior to the arrest of Pravin Raj, BJP functionaries like state secretary SG Suryah, Selvakumar and a number of influencers have been arrested for their posts on social media.
