In 2009, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government chose US-based Boeing over a Spanish firm to buy the P-8 Poseidon submarine hunter to counter increasing Chinese presence in the Indian Ocean. A decade later, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India said that the government had inflated the Spanish firm’s bid to make the Boeing offer appear attractive.
