West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has extended support to over 25,000 teachers in the state, who are set to lose their jobs after the Supreme Court upheld the Calcutta High Court's order cancelling the recruitment.

On 3 April, the Supreme Court held that the recruitment process was vitiated and hence, the Calcutta High Court rightly invalidated 25,753 teacher appointments done by the School Service Commission (SSC).

Pledging to file a review petition against this order, Banerjee met the distressed teacher at the Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata on Monday (7 April) and assured them of 'restoring their dignity,' The Hindu reported.

"We have separate plans to ensure eligible candidates don’t become jobless or have a break in service," the West Bengal CM, asserting that she is even ready to go to jail for standing with the teachers.

Banerjee also distanced herself from the corruption charges in the teacher appointment irregularities and said, "My name being dragged into something about which I have no inkling."

Notably, some of the teachers who arrived at the stadium to meet the West Bengal CM, alleged that they did not get passes “despite being genuine teachers” and were not allowed to enter.

A scuffle broke out between the teachers and the management. The police had a tough time calming down the enraged people who wanted to enter the indoor stadium but were not allowed to.
