Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has highlighted India’s potential to play a significant role in resolving international conflicts, India TV reported.

Speaking to ANI on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, she said, “I think it can play a very important role".

She was asked about India’s contribution to addressing ongoing wars.

Her remarks follow recent talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during which the two leaders exchanged views on global and regional issues, including the conflict in Ukraine, the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA), the Strategic Action Plan 2025-29, and the India-Middle East Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEEC).

During their discussions, both leaders emphasised the need for a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine.

PM Modi reaffirmed India’s full support for diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict.

They also reviewed progress on the India-Italy Strategic Partnership, which spans investment, defence, security, space, science and technology, education, counter-terrorism, and people-to-people ties.

Both leaders reiterated their commitment to strengthening this partnership under the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-29.

On economic cooperation, Meloni expressed Italy’s strong support for the early conclusion of a mutually beneficial India–EU FTA and voiced confidence in the success of the AI Impact Summit that India will host in 2026.

The two leaders also agreed to enhance collaboration under the IMEEEC initiative and maintain close contact on further steps.

The 80th UNGA session, which began Tuesday (23 September), has seen global leaders discuss pressing challenges, including wars in Ukraine and Gaza, as well as the growing recognition of Palestinian statehood.

The Russia-Ukraine war, now in its third year, continues to cause widespread destruction and casualties.

Russia has intensified missile and drone strikes on Ukrainian cities, while Ukraine has targeted Russian oil refineries and energy facilities.
