The American Jewish Committee (AJC) has sharply criticised recent remarks by senior Trump administration officials targeting India, calling them “deeply" troubling.
In a post on X, the US Jewish advocacy group denounced White House trade adviser Peter Navarro’s claim that Russia’s war in Ukraine is “Modi’s war.”
The AJC acknowledged concerns over India’s energy dependence on Russian oil but stressed that “India isn’t responsible for Putin’s war crimes,” describing the country as a “sister democracy,” an important US strategic partner, and a key player in global power dynamics.
The group urged Washington to reset ties with New Delhi.
Navarro has intensified his attacks on India in recent days.
In a racially tinged thread, he circulated a photograph of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in saffron robes and declared: “The road to peace in Ukraine runs through New Delhi.”
He alleged that Indian refiners act as an “oil money laundromat for the Kremlin,” buying discounted Russian crude, processing it, and exporting fuels globally, with the proceeds benefiting politically connected energy companies.
Linking his criticism to Donald Trump’s newly imposed 50 per cent tariffs on Indian imports, Navarro described the duties as both a trade and national security measure.
He argued that the US trade deficit with India effectively funds Russian oil purchases while American exports face tariff barriers in the Indian market.
Critics, however, noted the irony that much of India’s refined fuel from Russian crude flows to Europe, a close US ally.
