Supreme Court rejected an appeal of former finance minister and Congress leader P Chidambaram against the Delhi High Court’s order rejecting his anticipatory bail plea, reports ANI.

In a case being probed by Enforcement Directorate (ED) in INX Media case, the Delhi High Court had rejected Chidambaram’s anticipatory bail plea on 20 August. Subsequently, the Congress leader was taken into custody.

“Granting anticipatory bail at the initial stage may frustrate the investigation....It’s not a fit case to grant anticipatory bail. Economic offences stand at different footing and it has to be dealt with different approach," said the Supreme Court.

As per legal journalist Utkarsh Anand, while petitioning the SC against Chidambaram’s CBI remand SIbal had urged that his client should be put under house arrest if required but should not be sent to Tihar Jail.

"I am begging of you. Please don't do this. Protect me till you hear this case. He shouldn't be sent to Tihar," Sibal requested judges.

Chidambaram’s CBI custody was increased till 5 September by the apex court.
