Indian languages
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has written a letter to all higher education institutions in the country to celebrate every 11 December as 'Bharatiya Bhasha Utsav'.
11 December is the birth anniversary of Mahakavi Subramania Bharati, a legendary Tamil poet and freedom fighter. Bharati was multilingual and had learnt Hindi and Sanskrit during his stay in Kashi.
The letter suggests the institutions to organize a variety of events and activities to promote language harmony and awareness among students. It is to be held under the Ek Bharat Shreshta Bharat and Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (75 years of Independence) initiatives.
Exhibition stalls dedicated to languages of different states and regions, cultural programmes, wearing of ethnic dresses, quizzes, essay writing, elocution, 'My language, My signature', felicitation of multi-lingual students, demonstration of vernacular language software etc. are some of the proposals put forward by the UGC.
The initiative has come at a time when the country is rediscovering the ancient cultural linkages between Tamil Nadu and Kashi, through the month-long Kashi Tamil Sangamam.
