'Fight Against Islamist Terrorism Is Our Common Struggle': Angela Merkel Expresses Shock At Vienna Attack

German Chancellor Angela Merkel in a statement expressed her shock over the Vienna terror attack and in the same breath called the fight against Islamist terrorism their common struggle, Reuters has reported.

"In these terrible hours when Vienna has become the target of terrorist violence, my thoughts are with the people there and the security forces facing the danger...we Germans stand in sympathy and solidarity with our Austrian friends. The fight against Islamist terrorism is our common struggle", Merkel said in a statement released by her spokesperson.

French President Emmanuel Macron who is overseeing a widespread crackdown on radical Islamism in France commented that "our enemies must know who they are dealing with. We will not give in."

"After France, it is a friendly country that is attacked. This is our Europe. Our enemies must know who they are dealing with. We will not give in," Macron said.

The shootings in Vienna have now been confirmed as an act of Islamist terrorism by Austria's Interior Minister.

The shootings began in a busy part of the city on Monday night has so far left three people dead. Starting outside the city’s main synagogue, several terrorists opened fire in six locations in downtown Vienna.

The attacker opened fire on people in bars and restaurants, especially on those with outside seating, Nehammer informed TV reporters.

On one of the videos, an attacker could be heard shouting “Allahu Akbar.”
