Devotees carrying out Hanuman Jayanti celebrations in West Bengal’s Birbhum were in for a rude shock as the police resorted to lathi charge against them because they had allegedly not taken permission.

News channels showed visuals of the police baton-charging groups of saffron flag bearers on the grounds that they did not have the permission to carry out the procession. The organisers are said to have repeatedly sought permission to take out a procession to celebrate Hanuman Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Lord Hanuman, but were denied.

Left with no choice, they decided to carry out a peaceful procession without much fanfare, only to be lathi-charged.

This comes soon after the Calcutta High Court disapproved similar behaviour of the Trinamool Congress-run South Dum Dum Municipality that delayed a plea asking for permission to celebrate Ram Navami from a group of residents in Kolkata. The court had to step in and grant permission for the same while making its displeasure known to the civic body for its failure to respond to its citizens’ plea.
