The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has entered into an agreement with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) to transfer the technology to manufacture space-grade Lithium-ion (Li-ion) cells, reports The Hindu Business Line.

These Li-ion batteries are used by ISRO to store power for satellites and launch vehicles due to their longer life and higher energy density. They are manufactured by ISRO’s facility at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSCC) in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

ISRO has been sourcing the components for the cells from foreign vendors which are then assembled in India by BHEL. The agreement will enable ISRO to source them domestically once their production starts at BHEL’s production facility in Bengaluru.

The cells also find greater use in newer scenarios including storage and electric vehicles (EVs).
