The Mahindra e-Alfa Mini
Automotive major Mahindra and Mahindra today (8 September) launched its first e-rickshaw model – the e-Alfa Mini. Priced at Rs 1.12 lakh, the battery-powered three-wheeler can travel for up to 85 km at a top speed of 25 km/hr on a full charge.
Mahindra and Mahindra Chairman Pawan Goenka told reporters that due to government regulations, three-wheelers would be the first to go electric. The largest player in the electric vehicles (EVs) sector, Mahindra has a capacity to manufacture 1,000 e-rickshaws per month, with the e-Alfa set to go on sale in the National Capital Region on 9 September, followed by the cities of Kolkata and Lucknow.
The government aims to have 60 million electric vehicles on the road by 2020 and go completely electric by 2030. Earlier, state-run Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) invited global bids for 10,000 electric sedans that will run up to 150 km on a single charge, for use by government departments, where Mahindra will be a key player.
