Soon, India’s Electric Vehicles Could Be Powered By Batteries Developed by ISRO

In what can be seen as a boost to India’s endorsement of electric vehicles (EVs), the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) has successfully tested lithium-ion batteries developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) key centre for development of launch vehicles, the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre.
As reported by Mint, the government is planning to transfer the technology to companies for commercial production of these batteries that are meant to be used in two- and three-wheelers.
At a meeting chaired by Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Friday, it was decided that a central agency to lead the country’s EV programme, will also be setup.
“The technology should be transferred to companies in the private or public sector or joint ventures for commercial production of batteries. BHEL (Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd) is interested, but more companies should be roped in,” Mint quoted a government official as saying.
An earlier report by Mint, had mentioned the possibility of BHEL, the country’s largest power generation equipment maker, looking at the feasibility of manufacturing cells and batteries with technology developed by the ISRO for application in electric vehicles.
