Civil aviation authorities in India are keen to develop air route between Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya and Nepal’s Janakpur, the two religious towns of historic importance.

India and Nepal discussed the possibilities at the Global Aviation Summit that took place earlier this week. Other routes that have been discussed include Lumbini to Gaya, as well as Nepalgunj to New Delhi. The latter one is for those who are headed to Kailash Mansarovar.

Director General of Nepal’s Civil Aviation Authority Sanjiv Gautam has said that the formal approval is yet to be received, but things seem positive at the moment.

The Hindu quoted him as saying, “The direct flights will bring Indian tourists, especially pilgrims planning a trip to Kailash Mansarovar. It will also be beneficial for a number of people from western Nepal who have to either travel via Kathmandu or take rural transport via Uttar Pradesh.”

The main challenge lies in obtaining a slot at the busy international airport of New Delhi. As of now, Janakpur is equipped to only handle small planes. For international operations to be made possible, immigration and customs have to be established and the facility has to be upgraded.
